Best Hiking Trails Near McCall, Idaho

If you’re looking for the top hiking trails near McCall, Idaho, your relentless googling has paid off. There are many trails in the area’s rugged topography. Choosing from this myriad of hiking adventures can be more challenging than the hike itself. But fear not because we’ve dirtied our boots on a lot of the trails in McCall, and we have assembled our top picks for this popular weekend getaway destination.

Goose Creek Falls

Best Waterfall Hike Near McCall

Goose Creek Falls is a highly rated, out-and-back hike. You’ll see two waterfalls and spend some time among towering ponderosa pines. At 3 miles roundtrip with 820 feet of elevation gain, the trail is short but steep.

Loon Lake

Loon Lake

Best Historical Hiking Trail Near McCall

The Loon Lake trail is long at 10 miles round trip and eats up most of the day, but how often do you get to see a real piece of history tied to a fantastic story of survival? You’ll start your journey in open mountain country, dip into some dense forest, and wade through tall grass. At the end of the trail lies a forgotten treasure, an American B-23 twin-engined bomber airplane known as the “Dragon Bomber.”

Twin Lakes

Highest Difficulty Hiking Trail Near McCall

Don’t overestimate your hiking ability when considering Granite Mountain and Twin Lakes. For most, an afternoon at Twin Lakes will be plenty of adventure. For the die-hard hikers, you can continue to the Granite Mountain lookout. Grind your way to the peak and basque in the glow of your toughness while enjoying panoramic views of the Salmon River Mountains and the 7 Devils of Hells Canyon.

Louie Lake to Boulder Lake Loop

Best Backpacking Trail Near McCall

The Louie Lake/ Boulder Lake loop is excellent for those who want rewarding lake views without gaining too much elevation. The 7-mile loop will take you up to the serene Louie Lake, over the ridge of Twin Peaks, and down to Boulder Lake.

Louie lake has an intense calming effect as Jughandle mountain stands in front of you and reflects off the glassy water. Take some time here to enjoy the scenery, maybe even do a little fly fishing.

The trail is also great for backpackers with primitive camping sites at both lakes. We’ve logged a lot of miles on Idaho trails, and this is definitely my favorite hike.
