How to Spend 4 Days in Prague Itinerary: Day 2

Day 2

Day 2 of our Prague Itinerary is my personal favorite. Castles and Beer? This is what I came to Prague for!

Prague Castle

Make your way to the largest ancient castle in the world! While the castle is cool, the church inside the stone walls steals the show. St. Vitus Cathedral has the most amazing stained glass you’ll see anywhere in the world. Also, in the Cathedral is the burial site of King Wenceslas, Czechs Patron Saint. You may recognize “Good King Wenceslas” from the Christmas carol. While the song is about him, it’s not a Czech song. It was written by an Englishman who borrowed the tune from a Finnish song about springtime.

You cannot enter the room which King Wenceslas occupies. Not just because of the deceased saint but the Bohemian Crown Jewels are also hidden in this room. The jewels are only displayed to the public every 8 years. Seven locks keep the door secure. The seven keys to these locks have been distributed to Czechs top leaders, like the President and Prime Minister, who must all be present at the same time to open the door. Has a very “Lord of the Rings” Vibe right?

Strahov Monastery and Brewery

For over 850 years, the monks at Strahov Monastery have done two things, praise God and brew beer. These monks believed that they were required to create the highest quality beer as to not disappoint their lord and savior. Let’s just say that practice makes perfect in this scenario. The beer is delicious. The dark beer is a pitch black like a Guinness and falls right in the sweet spot of flavor and smoothness. It is said during the early days of the brewery, the monks would drink up to four liters of the ale per day per person. We have a lot left on our Prague Itinerary so I wouldn’t recommend trying to compete with that.
